City Colleges of Chicago has officially launched Illinois' first accredited Licensed Certified Professional Midwifery (LCPM) A.A.S. degree at Kennedy-King College in Englewood.
In less than a decade, traditional Black midwifery in Illinois has transformed from an outlawed felony into a state-accredited higher education institution. This shift marks a radical reclamation of maternal health and educational autonomy.

Star August Ali is not just a midwife—she is a movement. As Illinois' first Black Certified Professional Midwife, Star spent years practicing in the legal shadows, serving Black mothers in communities where maternal mortality rates rival those of developing nations.
Her relentless advocacy helped fuel the legislative victory that decriminalized direct-entry midwifery in the state. Now, she is channeling that same revolutionary energy into building the state's first accredited college midwifery program at Kennedy-King College—transforming what was once a felony into a degree.
